Matt Barnes는 다음 시즌 Suns의 많은 구멍들을 채워줄 것이다. 그런데 백업 포인트가드까지 채워줄 수 있을까?
Suns는 FA 시장에서 쓸만한 백업 포인트가드를 구하지 못했다. 만약 Goran Dragic이 온다고 하더라도, Dragic이 곧바로 쓸만한 Steve Nash의 백업이 될 가능성은 낮다.
하지만 파워포워드는 물론, 슈팅 가드까지 커버할 수 있는 Barnes의 능력은 어쩌면 포인트가드에 대한 흥미로운 옵션을 만들 수 있다.
Boris Diaw와 Leandro Barbosa가 현재 로스터에서 꼭 필요한 존재인가? Chicago Bulls는 현재 Luol Deng의 계약을 위해 Kirk Hinrich을 처분하고자 하고 있다. 이 상황에서 Diaw와 Hinrich의 트레이드는 어떨까? 놀랍게도 Hinrich와 Diaw의 연봉은 거의 같다. 이렇게 포인트가드 문제가 해결되면, Suns는 백업 센터를 구할 수 있을까?
물론 Suns와 Bulls가 협상을 하고 있다는 얘기는 없다. 하지만 Hinrich은 예전에 Suns가 관심을 가졌던 선수였다. 그리고 Suns는 지금 포인트가드가 필요하다. Barnes의 영입은 예상하지 못한 선수의 영입을 예고하는 것일 수 있다.

Phoenix Suns는 Leandro Barbosa와 Boris Diaw를 트레이드 매물로 내놓았다. Phoenix가 원하고 있는 것은 더 높은 드래프트 픽이나 Steve Nash, Amare Stoudemire, Shaquille O'Neal을 보좌할 또 다른 베테랑이다.
"내 생각에 우리가 필요로 하는 건 명확하다고 본다." Suns의 내부관계자가 ESPN.com에 말했다. "우리는 매일밤 Grant Hill에게 40분씩 뛰라고 할 수 없다. 그리고 Barbosa는 확실히 포인트가드가 아니다."
Phoenix는 Atlanta Hawks의 15픽을 가지고 있지만, Russell Westbrook, Joe Alexander, Brandon Rush를 지명하기에는 너무 낮다고 생각하고 있다.
현재 시장에 나와 있는 스몰포워드들은 New Jersey Nets의 Richard Jefferson, Dallas Mavericks의 Josh Howard, Charlotte Bobcats의 Gerald Wallace, Detroit Pistons의 Tayshaun Prince 등이 있다.
하지만 이 선수들의 Phoenix行은 쉽지 않아 보인다. Dallas는 라이벌 팀에게 Howard를 보내고 싶지 않아한다. Detroir의 Joe Dumars 사장은 Diaw에게 관심이 없다. 그리고 New Jersey는 2010년에 만료되는 계약을 원한다. 그리고 Phoenix가 Wallace의 계약을 떠안을지는 확실하지 않다.

NBA Draft를 1주일 남겨두고, 가능한 트레이드에 대한 Suns의 선택만이 남았다.
시즌이 끝난 이후, 어떤 딜도 Leandro Barbosa나 Boris Diaw가 포함된 채 진행되지 않았다. Barbosa나 Diaw가 포함된 트레이드는 최근 식어가고 있다. 하지만 여전히 트레이드는 일어날 가능성이 있는데, 이는 Phoenix가 15픽 보다 더 높은 픽을 얻길 원하기 때문이다.
Barbosa는 Portland와 New York이 관심을 받고 있다. Portland는 Martell Webster와 13픽, 그리고 알려지지 않은 다른 조건을 Barbosa의 영입 조건으로 제시했다. 지난 시즌 경기당 10.7득점과 3점슛 성공률 39%를 기록한 Webster는 수비와 리바운드에서 개선이 필요하다. Webster는 부정맥으로 지난 시즌 마지막 7경기에 결장했다. 계약의 마지막 시즌을 맞이할 Webster는 3.8M의 연봉을 받을 예정이다. 한편 Barbosa는 지난 시즌 평균 15.6득점과 3점슛 성공률 39%를 기록한 Barbosa는 4년간 27.4M의 계약이 남아 있다.
6픽을 가지고 있는 New York은 Mike D'Antoni가 New York의 감독으로 부임한 이후, Barbosa의 행선지로 계속 거론되어 왔다. 게다가 Barbosa의 개인 교사 역할을 담당했던 Dan D'Antoni도 Knicks의 코치로 부임할 예정이다.
Barbosa는 트레이드를 원하고 있진 않다. Barbosa는 Suns의 새로운 감독 Terry Porter를 만난 자리에서 "Porter의 성격은 우리 팀과 완벽히 들어맞습니다."라고 말했다.
Barbosa는 다음달에 있을 올림픽 플레이오프에 출전하지 않을 예정이다. 그래서 다른 때보다 Phoenix에 더 많이 머무를 예정이다. Barbosa는 Phoenix에서 Suns의 트레이너들과 상체 강화 운동 및 수비 훈련을 가질 계획이다.
"항상 트레이드에 대해 걱정했습니다." Barbosa가 트레이드 가능성에 대해 입을 열었다. "트레이드라는 단어를 좋아하지 않아요. 여기가 집 같으니까요."

前 Suns 단장인 Bryan Colangelo가 사장을 맡고 있는 Toronto는 Jorge Garbajosa를 바이아웃하기로 결정했으며, 이에 다재다능한 포워드를 찾고 있는 중이다. Diaw는 4년간 36.0M의 계약이 남아 있다.
Suns의 Steve Kerr 단장은 트레이드에 대해 발언을 거부했지만, 더 높은 드래프트 픽을 얻으려는 노력을 하고 있다고는 말했다.
"저희는 더 높은 픽을 원합니다." Kerr가 말했다.
Barbosa, Nash to team up
Barbosa는 자신과 Steve Nash가 9월에 브라질에서 자선 게임을 주최할 계획이라고 밝혔다. 여기에는 Amare Stoudemire와 Shaquille O'Neal이 참여할 예정이다.
Nash는 New York에서 자선 행사를 개최할 예정이고, Nash는 여기서 미국의 축구스타 Claudio Reyna와 1대 1 축구대결을 펼칠 예정이다.

Phoenix Suns의 선수들은 Mike D'Antoni 감독을 잃은 것에 대해 슬퍼했다. D'Antoni는 New York Knicks의 새로운 감독이 되기로 합의했다.
"Mike가 떠나서 말할 수 없을 정도로 슬픕니다." Steve Nash가 말했다. "제 커리어 가운데 가장 기억에 남고 재미있었던 4년이었어요. Mike는 정말 좋은 사람이었고, 훌륭한 코치였습니다."
Nash는 지난주 금요일 D'Antoni가 Suns의 감독으로 남을 가능성이 50-50이라고 말한 바 있다.
"저는 우리가 다시 한 번 우승을 위해 도전할 수 있다고 생각했습니다. Shaq와 함께 시즌을 시작할 수 있고, 다른 선수들도 여전하기 때문이었습니다." Nash가 말했다.
Raja Bell은 D'Antoni와 함께 뛰는 것은 정말 즐거운 일이었다고 말했다. 하지만 Bell은 왜 Suns가 새로운 감독을 구해야 하는지는 충분히 이해한다고 덧붙였다.
"비즈니스적인 면이라는 걸 알아요." Bell이 말했다. "Mike와 함께 했던 시간은 정말 즐거웠습니다. 누가 우리의 새로운 감독이 되는지도 흥미롭구요."
Suns가 우승을 하기 위해서 필요한 것이 무엇이냐는 질문에 Bell은 이렇게 대답했다. "제가 무슨 말을 한다고 해서 그렇게 바뀌진 않아요."
Leandro Barbosa는 "Mike는 우리에게 좋은 감독이었습니다. 훌륭한 감독이라는 사실에는 이견이 있을 수 없어요. Mike가 우리를 가르쳤던 방식을 좋아했습니다. Mike의 플레이 스타일 역시 좋아했어요. 우리는 정말 Mike와 아무런 문제가 없었습니다."
시즌 마지막 미팅때부터 D'Antoni와의 껄끄러운 관계를 드러낸 Amare Stoudemire는 D'Antoni의 New York行에 대해 인터뷰를 거부했다.
Nash는 Steve Kerr 단장이 새로운 감독을 구하는데 있어서 D'Antoni의 스타일과 비슷한 감독을 구했으면 좋겠다는 뜻을 피력했다.
"Mike와 비슷한 감독이 왔으면 좋겠습니다. 그렇게 되면 적응하는데 시간이 덜 걸릴 것 같습니다." Nash가 말했다. "팀을 개편한다고 해도 우리의 목표는 우승이니까요."

Suns notebook: Winning close ones a nice trend

After going 1-9 in games decided by three points or less the past two seasons, the Suns pulled out tight wins on back-to-back nights by one point in Chicago and two points in Toronto and rallied in both to accomplish it.
Leandro Barbosa beat the Bulls on a 3-pointer with 1.5 seconds left, and Steve Nash scored eight points in the final minute-and-a-half to fight off the Raptors.
“I think it shows what kind of mental state the team is in right now,” Suns coach Mike D’Antoni said. “We could have been happy with winning in Detroit and Chicago, but this team is about winning all of them. We have a confidence that will give us a chance to win every night.
“That’s why I don’t worry about letdowns. We just won eight straight road games (a five-game trip and a three-game trip to the East), but if we come home during this five-game homestand and lose a few we’ll waste all the good we did.”
L.B. raises game
It’s no longer Barbosa the backup. It’s more like “L.B. the Great.”
Barbosa hit the Suns’ biggest shot this season when he drilled a 3-pointer to beat the Chicago Bulls in the closing seconds Tuesday.
That was the difference between an ordinary 2-1 road trip and a sparkling 3-0 trip to the NBA’s far north. Barbosa’s shot was so big that it obscures his growing value as a point guard who can relieve Nash, rather than a guy who’s best at the off guard and shaky at the point.
“He’s doing a great job for us,” D’Antoni said.
“His turnovers are down. He’s moving the ball. And he’s always a threat to score.”
Barbosa’s continuing rise — he’s averaging career highs in scoring (16.4), assists (4.3), steals (1.11) and minutes played (30.1) — is a source of pride for Dan D’Antoni, the Suns assistant coach and brother of Mike, who works closely with Barbosa.
“There was a question whether he could play point guard and make the decisions,” Dan D’Antoni said.
“Over the last month, he’s shown he’s very capable. Along with athletic ability, he can set people up.
“The game-winning shot was the derby on the head.”
The next step for Barbosa, says Dan D’Antoni, is to learn to become a guy who finishes games, whether by a key pass, defensive play or shot.
If he can do that, “He can become a star in the league.”
D’Antoni thought Barbosa’s highlight reel game-winner was a case of a good guy getting what he deserves.
“He’s a hard worker, a great guy and a great teammate. Those are the guys you want to do well.”
Barbosa says he’s playing with much more confidence in part because of his work with the assistant coach.
As for the big game-winner, “I hit a couple shots like that in Brazil,” but never in the NBA.
EIGHTH MAN WOES
James Jones is getting another shot at the eighth-man role, the only question mark the Suns have at the moment.
Jones has been tried in this spot before. Same goes for Jumaine Jones, Marcus Banks and Jalen Rose.
As coach Mike D’Antoni tells it, the decision on who gets the minutes “is not a science.”
“It’s whoever fits in best, whoever helps us the most.”
On Wednesday, the Raptors helped get Jones going on a three-shot foul. He hit all three free throws and went on to score seven points in six minutes.
“It’s always good to play,” Jones said. “It’s a chance to find a rhythm.”
While sitting the bench the past couple of weeks, Jones has tried to “prepare more outside the game.”
An especially useful tool: shooting as soon as he arrives at the arena a couple hours before tipoff.
